Correspondent, Siliguri: The cold has not yet set in. But cold and cough are prevalent in every house. The crowd of these patients is increasing in doctors’ chambers and government hospitals. In most cases, breathing problems and asthma are appearing. Dust is the villain in the increase in cold and cough and breathing problems in Siliguri in the face of winter. The direction of air pollution in Siliguri city has already been detected to be dangerous. This time, dust has made this pollution even more dangerous. Dust is flying all over the city. Doctors also think so. According to them, although it is hot during the day and cold at night, there are not so many cold and cough patients at this time. This time, people are getting infected with this disease in large numbers without getting cold like this. Children are also not left out. In most cases, asthma or breathing problems are present. One of the possible reasons for this is the dusty city.
According to the city residents, roads have been dug in many places in Siliguri for laying underground cables. Even after the work was done, the roads have not been repaired. The city is covered in dust from that soil. The roads are impassable. Conscious citizens are using masks to avoid dust. Although the number is very small.
Due to the increase in the number of vehicles in the city, air pollution has already reached dangerous levels. With the addition of dust, the possibility of contracting various types of lung diseases is increasing, said Aritra Gangopadhyay, a prominent doctor of chest medicine. This former doctor of Siliguri District Hospital said that everyone must use masks in Siliguri where the air pollution and dust levels have reached. Along with this, awareness is needed. It is very important to go to the doctor on time. He said that dust allergy is one of the possible causes of the number of patients we are receiving with cold and cough. In most cases, patients are coming with breathing problems and asthma. This time, in many cases, the medicine is not working quickly. They have to take it for a long time.
Dr. Dipanjan Banerjee, head of the medicine department at North Bengal Medical College Hospital, and Dr. Subal Dutta, pediatrician, said that this time, as soon as winter sets in, more patients are coming with colds, coughs, and breathing problems. In this regard, there is no other way but for the common people to be aware.
Naturally, the question arises, what steps is the municipality taking regarding the dust spread due to the roads being cut off in Siliguri city? Siliguri Deputy Mayor Ranjan Sarkar said, we are keeping an eye on the matter. We have started watering the roads. 80 percent of the work of laying underground cables has been completed. In the meantime, the repair work of the damaged roads
will begin.
